Oven

This is one of the most important and must-have tools of a baker. This is because this is where you cook your baked goods. Deciding the right oven is depending on your needs.

In choosing your oven you must take note of how big your family is. You might also take into consideration choosing an oven that is bigger than you think you might need. It is useful when you have a guest in the house.

In baking, it is also important that you know your oven. Meaning you know how it works because not every oven is the same. Even if you saw in the recipe book that the temperature is 300F that’s not always the case because some ovens are hotter or cooler that you need to adjust the temperature.

In baking there are 2 types of oven that bakers consider buying

1. Convection Oven

The type of oven where the only source of heat is on the bottom. The heat goes from the bottom to the top. There is no way that moisture can escape as well so the cooking time tends to be longer for the food that should be dry to be dry.

Good for recipes that need to rise a lot as opposed to a convection oven that might finish cooking the outside of your batter before the inside is not yet cooked.

2. Conventional Oven

It has a fan inside that makes sure that the air is circulating inside the oven. The fan also helps to pull out the moisture which is good to keep the temperature and crispiness. The heat is also more even and consistent in this type of oven.

Whisk

It’s known that whisk is the most basic baking tool in the kitchen, and I totally agree with that. Spatulas and other tools will help you make the batter together but nothing can help you most in combing your ingredients than a whisk. We are not just aware but there are actually types of whisk out there.

The main function of a whisk is to introduce air in what you’re cooking or known as the “aeration”. Aeration is the process of allowing air into ingredients to add more volume or make them lighter. This method is essential in some recipes that rely on its structure in aeration. There are 3 common types of whisks.

1. Ballon Whisk

It has thin wires that form a wide-rounded balloon. It is best suited for beating large amounts of air into egg whites, heavy cream, or other liquids.

2. French whisk

Also is also known as a straight whisk and has thicker wires that are smaller than the balloon whisk. It is good for stirring sauces and also useful in stirring heavy batters. Can beat air into egg whites or cream as quickly as the balloon whisk but requires more work.

3. Flat Whisk

As on its name, this type of whisk has wires arranged in a flat shape. The wire has a lateral or curved shape so that the shape is like a spoon. This shape is also called the “roux shape”.

Measuring cups and spoons

Baking is about science and you have to follow the exact measurement for each recipe. And that is the reason why it is one of the must-have tools of a baker. There are measuring spoons and cups made of metal and plastic. So it’s up to you what to choose. Measuring cups and spoons is one of the basic baking tools that is essential.  Avoid using regular spoons and cups as it will ruin the recipe. In using measuring spoons and cups in baking you must ensure that the measurement is correct, in using it in dry ingredients you must scoop the ingredient then level it with a flat utensil such as a knife or metal spatula.

Digital Weighing Scale

Pastry brush

A small round or flat-shaped brush made with nylon, silicone, or sterilized natural bristles. This basic baking tool is useful for coating your pie crusts with egg wash or milk. You can also use this brush for your fish or meat and grease your pan with butter to avoid the baked treat from sticking.  The brush handles are usually made from stainless steel, nylon, or wood with varying lengths. If made of metal or nylon, it is important to make sure they will withstand high temperatures without either transferring the heat to the handle.

Silicone types are easier to clean. You can choose those pastry brushes to avoid bacteria.

Rubber spatula/Scraper

It is a cooking tool that has a rubber head. The handle is usually made of plastic, metal, or wood. In baking it is used for scraping and smoothing, it also does a great job of scraping the bowl to transfer the contents, such as batter, into another container, or to mix the other ingredients.
